Family climbing at Shift: a family-friendly climbing gym near Holland, MI

A youth group in front of the bouldering wall at Shift Climbing in Holland, Michigan

Some of the best sessions in our gym are families: a dad on the orange circuit, a nine-year-old on yellow two panels over, a teenager trying the steep wall on their own, and a grandma in the cafe with a latte and a front-row seat. Climbing is one of the few activities where every age can do the real thing on the same walls at the same time, and we built Shift for exactly that. Here's how family climbing works here, what it costs, and the answers to the questions parents ask us most.

Family-friendly climbing gym near Holland, MI: what that means here

"Family-friendly" gets stuck on a lot of things, so here's our specific version.

Everyone climbs the same walls. Our climbs are sorted into color circuits (groups of climbs by hold color, easiest colors first), so a cautious seven-year-old and a strong adult both have dozens of climbs at their level in the same room. We keep 8 to 10 climbs in each of our four most accessible colors at all times, which means 30 or more climbs a first-timer of any age can finish today. Nobody is sent to a kids' corner, and nobody is told what grade they climb, because there are no grades on the wall.

No ropes, no harness, no belay class. Shift is a bouldering gym: walls top out at 16 to 17 feet over 12 to 14 inches of engineered padding, and you climb up, climb down, or hop off onto the pads. A family can walk in and be climbing in ten minutes, with nothing to clip and no partner required.

Walk in any time. No reservation, no membership required, and free shoe and chalk rental with every day pass, so a rainy Saturday plan can be made at 1 PM and executed at 1:30.

You can see your kids. The cafe, the co-working tables, and the lounge all have sightlines to the mats. Parents who aren't climbing aren't furniture here; they're drinking good coffee with a view.

It's air conditioned. The whole facility, all year. A Michigan July is not a reason to skip a family session.

Kids are genuinely welcome, not just tolerated. Bringing a stroller in or having a toddler along in the cafe is great. A number of us have kids, and the two of us who own the place have three of our own. We love kids and we love having families in our space.

Cost of a family membership at Shift

Our family membership is $145 a month, and here's the part that matters: there is no limit to the number of family members on it, as long as everyone lives in the same household. Two parents and one kid, one parent and four kids, two parents and three teenagers: same price.

For comparison, our individual plans are $69 a month for a full adult membership (which includes one free guest pass a month), $118 a month for a dual membership (spouses or partners in the same household), and $48 a month for a youth membership (12 and under). So the math a lot of families run looks like this:

  • Two adults and one kid on individual plans would be $69 + $69 + $48 = $186 a month. On the family plan it's $145.
  • Two adults and two kids on individual plans would be $234 a month. Family plan: still $145.
  • One adult and two kids would be $165 a month individually. Family plan: $145, and it grows with the family for free.

Every membership includes free shoe and chalk rental every visit, and any member can climb any hour we're open, including the 6 AM Tuesday and Thursday sessions if that's when the family calendar has a hole in it. Current pricing is on the passes page, and the front desk can set up a family plan in a few minutes.

Day pass cost for a family: what a first visit runs

We don't sell a single "family day pass" because we'd rather just keep the individual passes cheap and include the gear. An adult day pass is $24 and a youth day pass (12 and under) is $19, and both include shoe and chalk rental, so there's no rental line on the receipt.

A family of four with two adults and two kids under 13 climbs for $86, all in. Two adults and one teenager (13 and up pay the adult rate) is $72. A parent and one kid is $43. If you come back a few times, the family membership math above starts to look good fast; most families who climb twice a month or more are better off on the $145 plan.

Sibling discount at Shift

For open climbing, the sibling discount is the family membership itself: two kids on individual youth memberships would be $96 a month, while the family plan is $145 for both kids and both parents, and a third or fourth kid is free. For day passes, every kid 12 and under is $19 with gear included.

For our classes and youth programs, such as the afterschool program and homeschool blocks, we do offer a discount when more than one sibling is enrolled. The rate depends on the program, so ask us about multi-child pricing when you sign up. We can accommodate it, and we'd rather you ask than assume it isn't there.

Best age to start climbing

We get asked this a lot, and the honest answer from watching a few thousand kids on our walls is that 6 to 8 years old is the sweet spot for starting. That's the age where the pieces come together: enough height to reach between holds on the easy circuits, enough coordination to plan a move before making it, and enough patience to try something twice. Kids who start in that window tend to get hooked, because they can finish real climbs on their first visit and see themselves getting better every week.

Our coached programs line up with that: the afterschool programtakes ages 7 to 13, and the homeschool blocks start at 7 as well, with a separate teen block for 13 and up. If your kid is a little younger and you're not sure, talk to us at the desk; we'll tell you honestly what we think based on the kid in front of us.

A few practical notes. Anyone under 18 needs a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian; do it online the night before and check-in takes a minute. Youth pricing (the $19 pass and the $48 membership) covers kids 12 and under, so a 13-year-old pays the adult rate. Teens have their own thing on Fridays: the middle and high school meetup is a drop-in $5 pass.

Can parents climb during kids' climbing class?

Yes, and plenty do. During our youth programs (the afterschool program, homeschool blocks, and camps), our instructors are running the class, so the hour is yours. Buy a day pass and climb elsewhere in the gym, or use the same pass to get a workout in on the fitness floor. If you'd rather not sweat, the cafe has coffee, baked goods, wifi, and a view of the class, and a lot of parents treat it as their weekly hour to get work done.

Our homeschool program is the extreme version of this: tuition ($360 a semester) includes a full gym membership for the enrolled student for the whole semester, so the kid climbs outside class too, and the monthly homeschool meetups are $10 for one child or $25 per family with multiple kids climbing, capped at 15 families so it stays a manageable hour.

Evenings and family night at Shift

We're open until 10 PM Monday through Friday, until 8 on Saturday, and until 6 on Sunday, and weeknight evenings are one of the best times for a family session: the after-work crowd is friendly, the setting is fresh (our crew resets sections every week), and a 6 to 8 PM climb sends everyone home tired in the good way.

Two standing events are family-shaped in different ways. Circuit Labs turns Wednesday nights into a gym-wide challenge that's open to everyone at every level, and our Mommas Meet-Up is the post-bedtime version: moms climb together from 7 to 9 PM at a $13 rate while someone else handles the bedtime routine. Check the events page for the current calendar; it changes by season.

Activities that count as exercise for the whole family

If you're looking for something the whole family can do that gets everyone moving, climbing is hard to beat. The CDC's guidance for kids calls for 60 or more minutes of daily activity including muscle- and bone-strengthening movement, and names climbing as that kind of exercise; an hour on the circuits covers it in one happy blur. For adults it's a full-body workout that doesn't feel like one, and our Rogue fitness zone and Tension Board 2 are included with every entry for the parent who wants a proper training session while the kids circuit.

The part the research keeps landing on, though, is enjoyment: the largest meta-analysis on why kids stick with sports found that fun predicts continued participation more than anything else measured. Climbing as a family is fun in a way that's hard to fake, because everyone is solving real puzzles and everyone gets to cheer. One of our members came back after her fourth baby to get strong again and told us the gym "is attracting everybody, from young people wanting to try something new to people like me who've maybe done it before." That mix is the whole point.

Holland venues with family memberships

Holland has a few places where a family membership makes sense, and we'd rather you pick the right one than pick us by default. The Holland Community Aquatic Center is the swim option and the classic winter engine; we're the dry-land option, and plenty of families hold both. What we'd offer as the honest comparison: our family membership covers unlimited household members for $145 a month, every visit includes free gear, the building is air conditioned, there's a cafe where the non-climbers can enjoy themselves, and every kid on the plan can climb any day we're open. We wrote a full local's guide to Holland's indoor and cold-weather options if you want the wider list.

Homeschool families

Weekday daytime is the quietest the gym ever gets, and our homeschool families know it. The homeschool programruns weekly 50-minute coached blocks starting at age 7, plus a teen-focused block for 13 and up. Tuition is $360 a semester and includes a full membership for the student, and we're vetted partners with several West Michigan school networks (Hamilton Flex families use code HAMILTON25 at checkout). One of our homeschool moms drives in from Hudsonville with three boys and told us, "My kids want to be here every week. They don't ever whine about coming." Her son's review: "It's just super fun and I think it's a great place to be." We'll take it.

What are other parents saying?

We could describe the vibe all day, but the families who climb here say it better. These are pulled straight from our Google reviews.

"A real treat with a group of friends. None of us are climbers but we were all challenged, helped, had space to socialize and went home with lots of smiles."
AJ W.
"The family always enjoys Shift. The staff is amazing; the routes are set for all experience levels and relevant for all kinds of movement."
Dan K.
"My kids LOVE Shift Climbing. They attend the homeschool classes and have learned so much and feel very encouraged by the staff."
Jordan
"The routes are always fun, lot of focus on moving, pretty chill place. Have a nice mix of easy and challenging routes which is nice for my level."
Heather W.

Jordan and her son Asher also sat down with us to talk about how the homeschool program became their PE class. Here's the short version, and the full story is here.

A first family visit, step by step

  1. Sign the waiver online for everyone, including yourself. Under-18s need a parent or guardian signature.
  2. Wear comfortable, stretchy clothes everyone can move in. Shoes and chalk are free at the desk; no gear to buy or bring.
  3. Check in and tell us it's your first time. We'll fit everyone for shoes and show you the circuits.
  4. Find your colors. Easiest colors first; each kid and each adult finds their own. Someone on the floor will point you to the first climb.
  5. Learn to come off the wall before you climb up it. It takes a minute and it's the most useful thing you'll learn all day.
  6. Climb, cheer, repeat. An hour is plenty for a first visit; families with younger kids often do 45 minutes of climbing and 30 in the cafe.
  7. Ask about the family plan on the way out if it went well. It usually does.

Questions families ask us

What age should my kid start climbing?

In our experience, 6 to 8 is the sweet spot: height, coordination, and patience all line up around then, and kids that age can finish real climbs on day one. Our coached afterschool program starts at 7. If your kid is younger and you're curious, come talk to us at the desk.

Do non-climbing family members have to pay?

No. Grandparents, partners, and siblings who just want to watch are welcome for free; we only ask that everyone who comes in signs a waiver. The cafe and lounge have coffee, wifi, and a view of the mats.

Can we bring a stroller or a toddler who isn't climbing?

Please do. Strollers fit, toddlers in the cafe are a regular sight, and we're a pretty kid-heavy crew ourselves: the two of us who own Shift have three kids of our own. The cafe and lounge are the family base camp.

Can parents climb while their kids are in class?

Yes. During youth programs our instructors run the class, so parents are free to buy a day pass and climb, get a workout in on the fitness floor, or settle into the cafe with a coffee and a laptop.

Is there a sibling discount?

For open climbing, the family membership is the sibling discount: $145 a month covers every family member in the household. For classes and youth programs, we do discount when more than one sibling is enrolled, so ask about multi-child pricing when you register.

Does the family membership cover grandparents or cousins?

The family membership covers family members living in the same household. Relatives outside the household climb on a day pass ($24 adult, $19 for 12 and under, gear included), and a full membership includes one free guest pass a month for exactly this.

Bring the whole crew. The first visit is easy to set up, the coffee's good, and somebody on the mats will be glad to show your kid where the yellow ones are. Here's everything you need for a first visit.
