If that itch still needs scratchin’, give us a call or ask any of our staff once you arrive!
Shift is an intentional space built for movement and community by a team of people who really care. We’re dedicated to crafting unique, innovative climbing experiences while fostering a wildly supportive, hospitable space where everyone belongs. We believe that Quality = Value + Care, and want to reflect that belief in all that we do. Whether you're here to push your physical limits or find your people, we're here to walk alongside you. Bouldering is a style of rock climbing where technical challenges are presented on shorter climbs, known as “boulder problems,” opposed to longer climbs known as “routes.” Boulder problems are usually 10–15 feet tall, so you don't need ropes or harnesses, but don’t let that intimidate you! The floor is lined with 12 to 14 inches of engineered padding. When you finish, you can climb back down using the holds or drop back onto the padding below.
Circuits are groups of climbs across our walls categorized by hold color, with each color representing a different level of difficulty. Every circuit features a diverse mix of movements designed to test your technique, power, and creativity. We highly encourage everyone to try "circuiting", which is attempting to send an entire color circuit. It is one of the most rewarding and fun ways to experience the gym!
We were inspired by the legendary bouldering circuits of Fontainebleau, France– one of the world's premier outdoor climbing destinations. Navigating a circuit is an incredibly fun, challenging, and social way to climb, and we wanted to bring that shared experience home to build a great community here in Holland.
To save time at the front desk, we highly recommend filling out your waiver online before you arrive. You can also grab a day pass ahead of time to make check-in a breeze! Just remember: anyone under 18 must have their waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian before climbing.
Nope! Feel free to drop in whenever we’re open and stay as long as you’d like. If you are looking to take one of our classes, we do recommend signing up online in advance to secure your spot before it fills up. Click here to learn about some events we’ve done
Anyone 14 or older is welcome to climb unsupervised in our facility. To keep everyone safe on the mats, climbers under 14 must be actively and directly supervised by a guardian or chaperone during their entire visit. Because bouldering involves inherent risks, proper youth supervision helps us keep the gym safe and fun for everyone!
We recommend wearing comfortable, stretchy, or loose clothing that lets you move freely on the walls. For the comfort and safety of all our guests, we just ask that everyone wears a shirt or tank top while inside the facility.
All you need to bring is your psych! Climbing shoes and chalk are required on our bouldering terrain, but we provide free shoe and chalk rentals with every day pass and gym membership. So, if it’s your first time, we’ve got you covered. Just show up ready to climb!
If you are looking for group activities or things to do in Holland, Michigan, bring the whole crew! If you have a large family, definitely check out our family membership options. If you are planning a group visit of 6 or more people (including youth groups) or want to host a special event, please reach out to us via our contact page so we can help you set it up.
With how tight climbing shoes can get, we'll already have enough "barkin' dogs" inside the gym! Jokes aside, pets are not allowed at Shift. Please leave your pups at home.
Nope! Bouldering needs no ropes and no belayer, so it's one of the few sports you can genuinely start solo. Plenty of our regulars first walked in alone. Between the circuits and the mats, you won't stay a stranger long.
Very likely, yes! Our walls top out at 16-17 feet - closer to a playground structure than a cliff - over 12 to 14 inches of engineered padding. You can always climb back down the way you came. Lots of our happiest climbers came in with a healthy respect for heights and left with a new hobby.
Yes - the entire facility, all year long. Michigan summers and climbing chalk are not natural friends, so we fixed it. Your grip (and your mood) will thank you.
On any given day, our four most accessible circuit colors hold 30 or more climbs - set across the whole gym, including the steep wall. You'll have plenty to work with on day one, and new climbs arrive weekly.
Bouldering means shorter walls (ours are 16-17 feet), no ropes or harnesses, and thick padding below - you're free to just climb. Rope gyms have taller walls that require harnesses, tie-ins, and usually a partner. We wrote a full guide to the differences if you're deciding where to start.
Our overhang wall runs 61 feet wide and moves from 45 to 60 degrees - with beginner-friendly climbs set on it on purpose. Steep climbing on good holds teaches technique faster than almost anything else in the gym. There's also a boulder that tilts 13 degrees each direction; we set it to be climbed in all three positions.
The honest answer: come feel the difference in the setting. Our routesetting is led by an owner certified to USA Climbing Level 5 (the organization's highest routesetting certification), our circuits guarantee climbing at your level every visit, and the building is the largest climbing facility in Holland - air conditioned, with a café that takes itself slightly too seriously. The Facility page has every number if you like specifics.
Not yet - and we're honest about the "yet." We're actively gauging interest in a Shift youth team right now. It's something we might build, and if enough families want it, we'd do it the way we do everything else: properly, led by our USA Climbing-certified setting and coaching staff. If your climber would be interested, tell the front desk on your next visit or email info@shiftclimbing.com - every note genuinely moves the decision.
