A climber training on an indoor climbing wall
June 15, 2026

What is the tiltable boulder? I see it but don't know how it works.

When you first step through the front doors of Shift Climbing in Holland, Michigan, your eyes are immediately drawn to the center of the room. Sitting right in the heart of our gym footprint is a massive, multi-faceted, freestanding structural island of climbing terrain that looks completely different from anything else in the industry.

This centerpiece is our custom hydraulic bouldering wall, which is widely considered the world’s first freestanding, fully tiltable boulder.

While many modern climbing facilities feature small, adjustable training boards (like a Kilter Board or Tension Board 2) that hinge up and down on a flat, two-dimensional frame, Shift’s central centerpiece is a massive, full-scale bouldering island.

It is a groundbreaking piece of structural engineering designed to completely rewrite how climbing routes are created, shared, and experienced. If you’re wondering how this central feature will transform both the indoor climbing world and your weekly workout, here is everything you need to know.

At a Glance: The World's First Tilting Boulder Island

Feature The Engineering Specs Why It Elevates Your Workout
Freestanding Island Design A 360-degree structural centerpiece situated in the heart of our Holland, MI facility. Maximizes the open floor plan, provides immaculate visibility, and creates a natural social hub on the mats.
True Multi-Directional Shift Moving parts that tilt 13 degrees in multiple directions simultaneously, rather than a single forward/backward hinge. Completely rewrites the spatial geometry, changing how the gym's prominent arêtes (corners) and planes climb.
Massive Adjustable Footprint Over 25 degrees of total adjustability stretching across roughly 70 linear feet of climbing terrain. Allows a massive portion of the gym's entire wall infrastructure to transform at the push of a button.
Collaborative Engineering Dreamed up by Shift co-founder Jonathan Brandt and built by industry leader Dreamwall. Brings a historic, never-before-seen piece of mechanical athletic technology right to West Michigan.

1. The Engineering Behind the Movement

The primary reason we built this hydraulic boulder was to shatter the static, unchanging nature of traditional climbing gym walls.

In a fixed gym footprint, physical space is naturally limited. If a gym builds a steep cave corner, it remains a steep cave corner until a major construction renovation.

Our collaborative design with Dreamwall changes everything. Because this multi-faceted boulder can shift 13 degrees in multiple directions, it gives our team over 25 degrees of total adjustability across a massive 70-linear-foot section of the gym. With a simple mechanical adjustment, the hydraulics can smoothly transform a section of the boulder from an approachable, balance-focused slab (leaning away from you) to a steep, gravity-defying overhang (leaning toward you).

2. Transforming the Climbing Experience Instantly

This groundbreaking engineering directly translates to a more dynamic, engaging workout every time you step onto our seamless, continuous foam mats:

  • Altering Routes Instantly: Normally, to make a climb harder or easier, a routesetter has to manually unscrew the plastic holds and physically relocate them. With our tiltable boulder, our team can leave the holds exactly where they are but completely transform the difficulty and style of a climb just by shifting the angle of the wall infrastructure.
  • Infinite Terrain Variety: By changing the tilt of the boulder at the push of a button, the exact same physical wall can offer entirely different spatial challenges. It alters how the physical geometry—like the gym's prominent arêtes (corners)—climbs, meaning your body never runs out of fresh physical puzzles to solve.
  • Dynamic Competitions & Community Events: This technology allows Shift to host unique local competitions and events where the terrain dynamically shifts between rounds or categories, offering an evolving, interactive experience you literally cannot get at a standard bouldering gym.

3. Ultimate Creative Freedom for Our Routesetters

For our professional route setting crew, this hydraulic wall acts as a massive, living canvas with variable physics. It allows them to experiment with how gravity, body positioning, momentum, and techniques like smearing or heel hooks change across identical hold sets when the wall shifts angles.

This flexibility essentially allows Shift to keep our entire gym environment feeling fresh and evolving constantly, without relying solely on the traditional weekly route-reset schedule.
