Indoor climbing on the lakeshore: Grand Haven, Saugatuck, Zeeland and the drive to Holland
If you live on the West Michigan lakeshore and searched for a climbing gym near you, you were probably sent to Grand Rapids or told there isn't one. Neither is right. Here is the local's map, the drive times from your town, and what is waiting when you arrive.

Both dedicated climbing gyms between Muskegon and South Haven are in Holland, and Shift is one of them. We are a bouldering gym: short walls, no ropes, thick padding. We sit on the north side at James Street and US-31, which is the corridor most lakeshore towns already use to get here.
From Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg
It is a straight run south on US-31, about half an hour depending on beach traffic. We are the first gym you reach. Exit at James Street and we are at the corner, with a big lot. You never have to go downtown, which matters on a Tulip Time weekend.
We open at 6 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A 6:15 session and the drive back up the lakeshore gets you to work by 8.
From Saugatuck and Douglas
About 20 minutes north on I-196 or Blue Star Highway. James Street is the exit before downtown Holland. Fennville is a few minutes more and South Haven is roughly 40.

Summer renters find us on the days the lake weather turns. The building is fully air conditioned, so a rained-out beach afternoon becomes a climbing afternoon in twenty minutes. No reservation, day passes at the desk, and shoes and chalk included.
Zeeland and Hudsonville
Zeeland is about 10 minutes west. Hudsonville and Jamestown are 20 to 25. These families fill our weekday programs because the drive is short enough for a school night. One homeschool mom drives in from Hudsonville with three boys every week. Her take: "It's just more fun. My kids want to be here every week."
Muskegon and the north lakeshore
Roughly 45 minutes south on US-31. As far as we can find, there is no climbing gym in Muskegon. Make the drive a full session, since the day pass covers the whole day. Climb, get a coffee, climb again.
What the drive buys
- Over 6,500 square feet of climbing, in the largest climbing gym in Holland, air conditioned year-round.
- A boulder that moves. Our hydraulic boulder tilts to vertical, 13 degrees left and 13 degrees right, so one structure gives you three climbs.
- A 61-foot-wide overhang, with easy climbs set on it on purpose, plus a Tension Board 2, hangboard and Rogue fitness zone.
- 14 inches of engineered padding. No ropes, no harness, no belay class. You walk in and climb.
- Routes organized by color, not grade, with 30 or more beginner climbs to finish on day one, reset weekly by four USA Climbing-certified routesetters.
- A cafe with Madcap espresso, coworking tables with wifi, and a lounge with a view of the mats.

Making the drive worth it
- Come for a session, not a peek. An hour and a half is a real session, and you can leave for lunch on 8th Street and come back.
- Try the early hours. Tuesday and Thursday at 6 AM are the quietest.
- Bring the family. Kids climb the same walls on their own colors. Under 14 needs a guardian on the floor. There is no minimum age.
- Sign the waiver online first. It takes two minutes.
- Groups of six or more should reach out ahead so everyone climbs from minute one.
Questions from lakeshore climbers
Not that we are aware of, in any of the three. The nearest are the two in Holland. Shift is about 30 minutes south of Grand Haven on US-31, about 20 minutes north of Saugatuck, and about 10 minutes from Zeeland.
No. Walk in any open hour. Classes are the exception, so reserve those.
Holland's other gym offers roped climbing. For walls up to 50 feet, Planet Rock in Grand Rapids and Inside Moves in Byron Center are both 35 to 45 minutes away.
Whichever town you are driving from, someone on the mats will be glad to show you where the yellow ones are.
Day pass $24 adult, $19 kids 12 and under, with shoes and chalk included. Full membership $69/mo, dual $118, youth $48, family $145.
